In December, we had the opportunity, thanks to Petzl Benelux, to test the new Petzl Avao harnesses.
The set consisted of the following products:
The new top with an integrated Croll will be released by Petzl in early 2025. Since this top was not yet available, we made the usual modifications during testing using a top and Croll from our own inventory, allowing us to use the new Avao harnesses for Rope Access work.
The tests were conducted during an assignment for Ibexo (Ibexo Projects), giving me a unique opportunity to extensively test the products in a real working environment. By working directly in practice, we could experience the performance and functionality of the products as intended. This hands-on approach provided valuable insights. Below is a summary of our findings.
Anti-Slip Adjustments ++
Putting on the harness with the new anti-slip adjustments for the hip, leg, and shoulder straps took some getting used to at first. Thanks to the plastic cover at the point where the strap passes through the buckle, more grip and stability are achieved. With a simple technique—slightly loosening the cover and pulling the strap—it works smoothly and intuitively. It requires a short adjustment period, but soon the action feels natural.

The major advantage is that the straps stay firmly in place. They do not shift, making wearing and working in the harness very comfortable.
Sit Harness Comfort +++
The harness fits well and comfortably. The padding is pleasant and provides adequate support.
Connection of Hip Belt to Leg Loops:
- The adjustable straps at the back are narrower and elastic, ensuring that the leg loops stay in place. A big plus: these straps are replaceable.
- The front straps of the hip belt are positioned slightly outward and are narrower. This improves the sitting posture and reduces pressure in the groin area, significantly increasing comfort.

Comfort of the Top Section +++
The top section of the harness is excellent. The standout feature is the shoulder straps, which are connected at the chest side via a D-ring and can slide freely through it. This ensures that the straps stay securely on the shoulders, even when extending the upper body to the left or right. The straps remain close to the body without restricting movement, which feels very ergonomic.
Front D-Ring on the Sit Harness +++
The front D-ring is a closed ring. The attachment strap in which the D-ring is placed provides space for both the carabiner of the top section and an additional Ring Open for positioning lanyards or cowtails, for example, in Rope Access work. This setup offers better organization and is more user-friendly.
Personally, the closed D-ring also gives me an extra sense of security and safety.
Conclusion
In total, we were able to use the harnesses intensively for two days, approximately 20 hours. Additionally, I was able to thoroughly inspect the harness in the workshop. Our findings are based on these experiences. In my opinion, the Petzl Avao is a reliable and comfortable harness for Rope Access and working at height, allowing technicians to work with confidence. I look forward to experiencing the Avao over a longer period.
Many thanks to Petzl Benelux for the opportunity to thoroughly test these harnesses.
